Yes, I know. I really do. I’ve been away for what seems like an eternity. But I’ve got a good excuse!
Actually, no I haven’t. It’s unforgivable. I feel like I’ve neglected my blog and that makes me sad. And I’ll try not to do it again. I’ve been taking a break from writing while I get the story completely straight in my head (or at least firmly crooked to quote Douglas Adams). Not to mention the other things that have been going on such as work (and when doesn’t that get in the way), holidays (the next blog post), work and well, now Christmas.
So, for those of you who read religiously (are there any of you left?) here’s the current state of play……
Yes I know, I’m like a bus. You wait ages for one and then three posts come along at once. What can I say, I’m in a particularly ranty and chatty mood. Make the most of it, I’ll probably disappear for the next two months. Well, I’ll try not to, but you know how it is 🙂
Anyway, enough rambling. I’ve been reading through the third book (again) and have decided once and for all that I hate bits of it. Not hate in the same way that I hated Pterodactyl, but close. Not all of it you understand, I still like the first couple of chapters, but everything after that doesn’t feel right. I can’t quite explain it and it’s probably because I’ve spent so long doing other things and not writing, but somethings wrong.
Not so much a writing post (well, kind of but mainly not!), but I thought I’d share with you my experiences over the weekend.
Friday was the last day of term and our daughter was awarded ‘Child Of The Year’ for her class which we’re very proud of. She works hard and unlike our son who seems to remember things like spellings after the first attempt she has to work at it and she’s been working at it all year. I’m proud of both of them, but since my daughter was upset on Wednesday because she thought she was ‘stupid’ it was nice that the award came right on the back of her upset. She wasn’t aware she was getting it until her name was called out and the sense of achievement on her face was fantastic to see and I’m glad I took the afternoon off to see it.
A couple of weeks ago I posted about cover art and whether it makes much difference (here). So after changing the cover art and putting the book up for free I can finally reveal the answer to the question.
If you can’t be bothered to read the rest of the post then the answer is no. If you’re bored, a masochist or just plain curious about what this slightly weird blogger/writer is going on about and his undoubtedly wrong conclusions are then read on.
Yeah, slightly off the peg I know, but when I was driving home from Leeds I was being badgered by the lead character, Sam. Never one to refuse an opportunity for (a) ridicule and (b) expanding my horizons I decided to try a little experiment. So here we have the interview that played out in my head…… 🙂
Sam Johnson : Thanks for taking time out to answer my questions
W. Chaser : No problem. No holds barred policy here. I can’t guarantee to answer every question, but I’ll try.
While I was in the office today one of my colleagues asked if they could get hold of my book.
‘Sure’ I replied ‘It’s on Amazon. I write under the pen name of W.Chaser’
‘It’s £1.66. I’m not paying that, can I have a copy for free?’
I have to admit, I’m struggling. After publishing Shadow Retribution I picked up the third book (50 pages done, 15K words) and read through it again, sat down, started a new chapter and……
Nothing. Zippo, zilch, nada, big fat zero. I wrote a couple of paragraphs. I deleted them. I wrote another couple. Deleted them.
Now, before you get too worried, ‘Shadow Retribution’ is the name of my second book so you can rest easy that I haven’t gone and done something bad to anyone else.
It’s taken close to 6 months to completely edit, rewrite, re-read, re-edit, re-read and ‘fix’ all of the grammatical and spelling errors, but it’s now finished, and after reading it so many times I can definitely say that if I never read it again I won’t be sorry. Actually that’s a bit of a porky but you get the gist. If you’re interested the first three chapters are on the novels page and it’s currently under ‘review’ by Amazon prior to publishing.
My wife and I recently finished watching the series ‘Once Upon A Time’. Personally I think it’s one of the best things I’ve watched in a long time and would likely make it into my top 5 all time faves.
What I found most interesting though was how the writers had taken well trodden material and changed it into something that brought a new and fresh twist on the Disney fairytales and books that many of us will be familiar with (and before Im corrected I know Disney took in most cases existing stories, but let’s face it they pretty much propelled the characters to the status they are).
is, as the saying goes, paved with good intentions. Not that I think I’m going to hell for not doing any updates for a while mind you, but even so. Unfortunately life gets in the way, or as is more commonly the case my ‘real’ job.
Several weeks ago I got a phone call on Saturday, which doesn’t happen very often so I instantly know it’s a problem. Power failure at one of our data centre’s. Okay, fine thought I expecting to just wait until the power came back on, it’ll be fine the UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) will take over, job done. Except it was the UPS that caused the failure and the site was dark.
Irony at it’s finest, uninterruptable power supply that interrupted the power…..
